European Vacation 2013 - Day 8

Today was our last full day to enjoy Germany.  Since we had driven the van all week to our destinations, we decided to venture into Munich via train today.  It was a new experience for all of us but I practiced reading the time tables enough to get us where we wanted to be, when we wanted to be there.

It was another sunny day so we walked to the train station which was about a 10 minute walk (downhill).

I love this photo because it captures E just as she is.  If there's something to jump, she'll jump it.

Posing for another photo for Mom.  I was glad that some of the pretty flowers were still in the flower boxes on all the buildings.

Schliersee train station

Here comes the train!!

We were excited to have a different view for the hour long trip into Munich.

Once we got off at the central train station, we walked to a metro stop to take a tram.  We were never sure if we were heading in the right direction.  Some tram drivers were nicer than others but we always made it to the right one.  And we didn't cause any traffic accidents getting there!

It took a great deal of walking and asking directions more than once but we finally found our first stop -
The Nymphenburg Palace.  This place is huge!

Looking back on our walk to the palace

The closer we got, the bigger it got!  I couldn't fit all of it in one photo.  This palace was the summer residence of the rulers of Bavaria.

We did not have time to tour the inside of the palace.  We did take time to see the gardens though.  Those big white rectangles are covers over some of the trees and shrubs.  They were preparing for winter when we were there.

I tried to imagine this place in the summer with flowers blooming in all the flowerbeds.  But it was also lovely in late October.

I was standing above the arches on the balcony when I took the photos of the garden.  This is the "back" of the very center of the palace.

After asking for more directions, we were off to our next stop.  Once again we waited on a tram.  We almost missed this one as we were on the wrong side of the road.  But the driver graciously waited on us as we dodged traffic.  Thankfully, it wasn't terribly busy but I'm sure we were slowing him down on his schedule.

View of BMW buildings from the walking bridge going over the highway - We did not get to tour any of those buildings.

Soccer is huge in Europe and this arena is used often.

We went up in the Olympic Park Needle to see the city from that view.  This is Olympic Village where the athletes stayed during the 1972 Summer Olympics.

See the BMW building?

We were thankful for a clear day so we could see so far.

(This one's for Alexa.  Apparently Elvis is in Munich too.)

After a round of photo taking, we discovered that we could go even higher in the tower.

Back on the ground, we found a place to enjoy some crepes.  Can you guess which filling the kids chose?

Walking back to the metro station, we decided that the landscaping workers have good job security with all the leaves they have to rake and bag.  We saw them working everywhere even as the wind kept blowing off the leaves.

This was one of our fist views after we stepped out of the train station at Marienplatz.

Lunch - round 2
Pork sandwiches with mustard and fried skins.
Oh my!

And of course, pretzels were everywhere.

After exploring the city center, we started out to see some more sights.  Honestly, I can't remember what half these buildings are now.  I should have kept better notes of all the names.

Metro station

We were told that we should not miss the English Gardens.  So we took the train away from the city center and then started walking.  We were searching for the Chinese Pagoda.  It was supposedly something we should not miss.

After almost an hour of walking, this is what we found.  A little disappointed.  But that wouldn't stop us from enjoying our day.  So we headed back to the train...

...which required more walking.  But this time we found a bit shorter route.

Ahhh...resting our feet on the train.

We missed the "show" at the Glockenspiel every time but it was still interesting to see.

One last stop at Petersplatz for some dinner before heading to the train station

And we made it back to Schliersee the same day we left.

That downhill walk in the morning was an uphill walk at night so we stopped for some gelato (ice cream) to give us energy to make it up the hill.

This sign meant we were getting close to our resort!
